How to get the world’s highest plank – and how much money it will cost you
The world record for the longest plank in a row has been broken by a young man from Australia, who set the world record by a whopping 754 metres.
The record-breaking feat was accomplished by 21-year-old Daniel Ritchie from Canberra.
Ritchie has been on the plank since May in the backyard of his house in the northern city of Adelaide, and he is now aiming for the record with a total plank of 694 metres.
He is also the first person in history to break the world mark by a plank of this length.
“I am very proud of myself and I have had a lot of people telling me they want to know how I have done this, I am very happy with that,” Ritchie told Al Jazeera.
“This is the world, and it is not for the faint of heart.”
Ritchie, who is the first to cross the plank on a longboard, was born with cerebral palsy, but he now sees himself as a champion.
“For me it is about helping others, about helping those who are in the same situation as me, and helping them to understand how to be a better person,” he said.
“There is nothing I could have done to improve my life in any way.
It was all my own.”
The plank is a challenging sport for most people, and Ritchie is not the only person who has tried to break it.
In 2015, US Olympic champion Matt Kibbleson also attempted the plank, and also failed to complete the record.
“The plank can be challenging, and the athletes in the past have all failed,” said Michael Roesch, an exercise physiologist at the Australian National University (ANU).
“But we have to recognise that this is a sport that is extremely physical, and there is a huge amount of risk involved in doing this in any sport.”
However, Roesich said that if someone were to fail, they could still be eligible to try again.
“If someone does succeed, then there’s always a chance that they could be eligible for a new attempt,” he explained.
Roesch also explained that it was important to be aware of your own limitations.
“A good plank is like a muscle, you can get stronger and stronger by using that muscle,” he added.
“You don’t need to be as strong as someone else to do this.
You just need to keep pushing yourself.”
Roesich added that it is important to have the right equipment to do the plank in the first place, including a long board, a scooter, a walking stick and a board with an open top.
“It’s not like the plank is just an exercise.
You need a big frame, you need a good base, you have to be able to handle all the risk,” he advised.”
So if you want to try it, you’ve got to be sure you have the proper equipment.
And that means having a good, solid foundation.”
