What to Know: The ‘Cowboys’ Are a Different Team than We Thought, NFL.com’s Dave Birkett reports
NFL., Getty Images — The Dallas Cowboys are different than the Houston Texans.
They are a different team than we thought.
The Cowboys are a team that is poised to go all in on winning football games.
The Texans, meanwhile, have a few more wins and a lot of losses than we think they will, but that doesn’t mean they are anything less than a Super Bowl contender.
The Houston Texans were ranked last in the NFL in total defense and scoring defense and were just 27th in scoring defense.
It’s a very different team.
They have a star quarterback in Trevor Siemian and a star running back in DeAndre Hopkins.
The team has a star cornerback in Aqib Talib, and two of the most dynamic receivers in the game in Dez Bryant and Odell Beckham Jr. They also have a lot more talent on offense, including running back DeAndre Washington, who is now a top-10 fantasy running back.
So, who are the Houston Cowboys?
The Dallas Texans defense has been dominant for years, ranking first in the league in points allowed and third in points scored, and that hasn’t changed since the start of the 2017 season.
This year, the Texans were No. 1 in both categories and finished with the NFL’s fourth-best record.
It wasn’t easy to beat the Texans, as they outgained them by 1,788 yards, but they have been dominant in every facet of the game.
And it doesn’t get much better than this.
The defensive line is one of the best in the entire NFL, and they have a great running game that is one that will continue to produce big plays down the field.
They’ve got some talented wide receivers, including Dez — who was an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M in 2017 — and DeAndre Johnson, who has been named one of two top 10 receivers in NFL history by ESPN.
The secondary has been one of our favorite groups in the history of the league.
Safety Dashon Goldson is a beast, and cornerback Patrick Robinson has been among the NFL leaders in interceptions and returned kicks.
Cornerback Kareem Jackson is one the NFL all-time leading kick returners.
Running back Kareem Hunt has also been a big factor for the team.
The offense is led by quarterback Matt Cassel, who led the league with 17 touchdown passes and no interceptions in 2017.
But Cassel also has to contend with a lot better quarterbacks than the Texans.
The only guy that really stands out is Matt Schaub, who was the league’s top passer last season with an adjusted completion percentage of 81.3%.
That’s impressive for a quarterback who has had success in the past.
But Schaub will need to learn to master his new offense this year, and the Texans offense is one he will be expected to handle better than any other team in the AFC West.
But the biggest change for the Texans this season will be on defense.
The defense improved last year in both pass rush and special teams, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Texans competitive in the division.
It will be a tough task for the Dallas Cowboys to compete with the Houston Colts and Denver Broncos, and their defensive struggles in the 2017 regular season are a major reason for the Broncos and Texans to have high hopes for this year.
This season, the Cowboys are not only going to be able to score a lot, but will be able control the tempo of the contest.
That is going to come down to how well they can handle pressure on quarterbacks and run the ball.
This is the biggest difference between the Texans and the Dallas Broncos, so this should be a fun divisional battle this year for the Cowboys.
