Philippine Military Academy’s Voice of Leadership Forum Shines Light on the Crucial Role of Leadership in Urban Warfare

General Rolando D. Bautista (Ret.), former Commander of Joint Task Force Marawi during the crisis in 2017, former Commander of 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division, and the 59th Commanding General of the Philippine Army, together with Col. Jo-ar A. Herrera, former JTF Marawi spokesperson and Assistant Chief of Staff for Civil-Military Operations of the 1ID, and Maj. Floren P. Herrera, former Platoon Leader, 2nd Scout Ranger Company, 1st Scout Ranger Battalion, conducted lectures and roundtable discussion on “Art of Leadership: Lessons Learned and Best Practices in Urban Warfare During the Marawi Crisis” with the cadets from PMA Class Siklab Laya of 2025  Mabuhay ang PMA Class Talang Dangal of 2026 at the Lopez Hall of Leaders, Philippine Military Academy in Baguio City on August 29, 2024.

With about 500 audience members, the lectures were part of the “Voices of Leadership” lecture series conducted by the PMA’s Tactics Group. Gen. Bautista, Col. Herrera, and Maj. Herrera reflected on the characteristics and behaviors that officers should exhibit in high-pressure situations by sharing their leadership experiences during the Marawi Campaign. 

“These lectures aim to inspire the cadets to cultivate their own leadership skills and develop a deeper appreciation for the importance of strong leadership in achieving organizational goals,” Gen. Bautista said.

“The Voice of Leadership lecture series puts forward and underscores the importance of responsive leadership where our cadets will gain valuable insights into effective strategic, tactical, and operational levels of management exemplified during military campaigns including the Marawi crisis. By examining and understanding how senior officers navigate complex challenges, inspire and motivate subordinates, and foster a culture of excellence will provide valuable guidance for our future military leaders,” said BGen. Ramon P. Flores, PMA Commandant of Cadets.
